Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the rich cultures, traditions, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada. As we reflect, we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from and celebrate Indigenous voices through music and the arts. We remain committed to fostering understanding, respect, and meaningful connections within our community. Today we also look back to our 2026 education concert, The Spirit Horse Returns, which saw thousands of local students join us at the Concert Hall to experience the power of storytelling through performance. We are deeply grateful to the artistic team behind The Spirit Horse Returns for collaborating with us to share the remarkable story of the Ojibwe Spirit Horses. Have you watched "Marty, Life is Short" on Netflix? The new documentary shares the life and work of iconic Hamiltonian Martin Short. Back in the 1950's and 60's, Short's mother, Olive Short, was Concertmaster with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. His Father, Charles Short, was chair of the Board of Directors in the 1951-52 Season. Then, in the 1970s, Martin Short himself shared our stage as narrator on several family concerts. Meet the inaugural Conducting Fellowship cohort as part of the HPO's Centre for Musical Leadership. We are excited to welcome these conductors to Hamilton this fall! The Conducting Fellow and Apprentices will work closely Music Director, James Kahane, orchestra musicians and administrative staff throughout the season, gaining practical experience in rehearsal leadership, score preparation and artistic collaboration and planning.
