  • Conductor Alexander Cannon will be leading our 3-day HPYO Summer Intensive! We asked Alexander a few questions to get to know him a bit before next week ⬇️

HPO - What are some hobbies you enjoy and some fun facts about you?
Alexander – “I have two pet guinea pigs, Phyllis and Daphne, who are quite the characters. I love spring and summer months because I dedicate a lot of time to my vegetable garden - it's quite necessary to grow my own lettuce with ravenous guinea pigs! I can bake a mean cake or cookies or a pie.. and I have been known to churn up a batch of homemade ice cream.”

HPO - What are some of your favourite works and composers/bands?
Alexander – “I do have a few works and composers I find myself gravitating to over and over again - in particular here I'll mention Jean Sibelius' Fifth Symphony - it is both quite beautiful and bizarre, which is probably why I enjoy it. I love that this work is so precisely notated, and yet the margin for interpretation is HUGE! I've heard probably about 30 renditions of this work, recorded or live, with various ensembles and conductors. Though it's the same work of music each time, it feels as though the expression from the musicians is unique to that moment of the recording or concert. And I think that's what we seek as musicians, to create a one-time-only experience, something that is so very special precisely because it can never be duplicated. This makes one feel so alive!

Otherwise, as an orchestral brass player I often listen to Mahler and Prokofiev, and I also have a soft spot for Paul Hindemith's compositions. And the Beatles! I tend to seek out orchestral and folk music of living composers - it's so important that we create and present the music of now, today, because this is what art is! It reflects the world we live in and helps us navigate our lives!”

  • Introducing our #HPYO TUNE UP! Summer Intensive Conductor, Alexander Cannon! @al.cannon.music

We asked Alexander what led him to pursuing #music and what a life dedicated to music has meant to him and his own personal growth. Here is what he said:

🎺“I’ve played trumpet since I was a kid, and eventually received a doctorate in trumpet performance from UBC out in Vancouver. But I always enjoyed leading groups of peers, as far back as high school. I did some conducting here and there, and finally decided to turn to it more seriously after organizing and leading a reading session of Respighi's Pines of Rome for fun with friends and colleagues. I realized how fulfilling it was to bring everyone together, and so I started learning about conducting technique and score study.

Being a professional musician means that one enjoys the immense privilege of collaborating with other musically passionate humans! To me, there's nothing else in the world like playing in or leading an ensemble - it's a unique activity that bonds people together and gives true, deep meaning to life.

Dedicating oneself to musical study - be it an orchestral or jazz instrument, or through one's voice, or as a pianist - is like examining a massive mirror. The mirror - the music - shows you everything there is to learn about yourself, both wonderful and not so wonderful, revealing a person's true self. It's a very intimate process that is rewarding beyond measure, because it fosters personal integrity. Music has helped me profoundly know what it means to be human - even as a young child. People quickly learn how special it is, no matter what age someone may tackle learning an instrument!”🎺

Alexander's love of music education is clear, and we can't wait for him to inspire our #HPYOtuneup participants August 16 to 18! To learn more or register, use the link in our bio to find link for the HPYO TUNE UP! page on hpo.org.
