About

Conducting Workshop

Join our new Music Director James Kahane for conducting instruction. In this workshop, students will learn:

  • Basic beat patterns
  • Cuing and musical expression
  • The career path for a conductor
  • A discussion on musical leadership

This workshop can be offered in school or as an add-on to a visit to First Ontario Concert Hall, and is dependent upon Maestro Kahane’s availability.

If James Kahane is unavailable on your requested date, we can offer this workshop with either our HPYO Concert Orchestra conductor or one of our Conducting Fellows.

Audition Preparation Workshop

Have one of our HPO musicians work with your students on audition preparation. This workshop will address post-secondary auditions as well as orchestral auditions.

This workshop will cover:

  • Choosing repertoire
  • Planning and preparation
  • Preparing excerpts
  • Dealing with nerves
  • Best practices at the audition

If desired, all or part of this workshop could also function as a mock-audition or master-class with our HPO musician providing feedback to your students who are preparing for auditions. This workshop can be offered in school or as an add-on to a visit to First Ontario Concert Hall.

Composition Workshop

Have our Composer-in-Residence, Abigail Richardson Schulte, visit your classroom to discuss compositional techniques and work with your students. This SHSM Advanced Training can be offered as a single or multi-visit option.

Single Visit Option #1: With a single visit, you can have Abigail Richardson Schulte give a presentation to your students about her compositional processes with examples from recordings of her work. Students will leave with a better understanding of compositional techniques, the steps to take toward a career in this specialization, and of course, inspiration.

Single Visit Option #2: If you have your students working on a composition assignment, bring our Composer-in-Residence to your classroom for final performances to provide feedback on works created and presented by your students.

Multiple Visit Option:  Enjoy an initial consultation with our Education Manager to finalize the format of your assignment and/or this workshop.

After this initial consultation, over the course of 3 visits, our Composer-in-Residence, Abigail Richardson Schulte will visit your classroom to introduce approaches to composition, help students with their works in progress and finally, visit for final performances of student compositions to provide feedback on the student work.

(This multiple visit option is available for $600.)
