National Philanthropy Day, November 15

Philanthropy is “the love of humankind,” and National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) – November 15 – is the day that thousands of people around the world come together to both put that word into action and recognize the change that word has brought to our communities. NPD is a celebration of philanthropy – giving, volunteering and charitable engagement – that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy makes to
our society and our world.

When you give to the HPO, your support helps ensure that the orchestra is able to offer exceptional programming which benefits our community. Whether your contribution is as a volunteer, annual contributor or generous benefactor, you are an important part of the family.

Donor Spotlight: Dr. Robert Summers-Gill

The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra is pleased to recognize Dr. Robert Summers-Gill for his long support of the HPO and many other arts organizations in Hamilton, including Theatre Aquarius and the Hamilton Children’s Choir.

Originally from Saskatoon, Robert arrived in Hamilton in 1956 after studying nuclear physics at the Universities of Saskatchewan and California. For 32 years, he was a professor at McMaster University, teaching and conducting research. Today, he is actively engaged as a philanthropist and community booster for many Hamilton organizations. The performing arts has been a particularly rewarding area of interest for Robert who enjoys concerts and theatre performances. Among other things, Robert recently made it possible for the HPO to purchase new chairs for our musicians onstage, and has annually supported our Principal Flute. When asked why he supports the arts, he says, “Where would we be if we had no arts at all?” He adds that city development is important, but residents need things to do, and the joy classical music, theatre and art brings can’t be overlooked.
