HAMILTON, ON – The HPO premieres its second concert broadcast of the 20-21 Season, Whimsical Woodwinds on October 17 featuring a stunning selection of works highlighting the distinct colourful sounds of each instrument.

This one-hour performance features quintet, duo and solo performances recorded at McMaster LIVELab and produced in collaboration with our media partners at Hamilton-based Banko Media.

Principal musicians Leslie Newman, flute; Aleh Ramezau, oboe; Dominic Desautels, clarinet; Eric Hall, bassoon; and Jessie Brooks, horn begin the broadcast with Canadian composer Alison Yun-Fei Jiang’s On Light and Birds for woodwind quintet. Each musician also presents solo works from their instrument’s repertoire including Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for Clarinet and Iranian Canadian composer Iman Habibi’s Surge for solo flute. The concert closes with Barber’s quintet Summer Music.

Whimsical Woodwinds and the Inside the Music: Pre-concert Talk hosted by Abigail Richardson-Schulte are available to view on the HPO’s online concert platform Viola for 30 days beginning October 17 at 7:30pm. Whimsical Woodwinds access can be purchased as a single broadcast or as part of a Flex Five or All Access subscription package.
