HAMILTON, ON – Members of the HPO strings section take the stage for our third broadcast concert of the 20-21 Season, Reflections from Russia. Curated by Music Director Gemma New in close collaboration with featured musicians, this concert features works written by Russian composers during the Cold War as highlights.

This one-hour performance features moving performances of deeply emotional works recorded at McMaster University’s L.R. Wilson Hall and produced in collaboration with our media partners at Hamilton-based Banko Media.

Featured musicians include Bethany Bergman, violin; Suhashini Arulanandam, violin; Stephen Sitarski, violin; Cecilia Chang, violin; Chau Luk, viola; and Laura Jones, cello. Prokofiev’s Sonata for Two Violins displays the expressive potential of the instrument, using the range of the violin’s palette. Written during Stalin’s repressive regime, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 serves as a powerful autobiographical work expressing the composer’s emotional state at the time it was composed. This concert also features contemporary works Darshan by composer Reena Esmail and Vincent Ho’s Morning Song.

Reflections from Russia is available to view on the HPO’s online concert platform Viola for 30 days beginning November 14 at 7:30pm. Reflections from Russia accesscan be purchased as a single broadcast or as part of a Flex Five subscription package.
