FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to announce the first concert of the 17-18 Indie Series. On December 13 at 7:30pm at the Bay City Music Hall (50 Leander Drive) the Indie Series returns with a performance that blends the funk-rock-hip hop sounds of local band The Altobeelays with the musicians of the HPO.

Indie Series arranger, Christien Ledroit describes the Altobeelays’ sound as “a cross between Parliament, the Beastie Boys and a less-angry Rage Against the Machine, though I’m sure they’d add several more influences to that.”

Founded at Mohawk College in 2009, The Altobeelays are a Hamilton band featuring vocalist Dan Weiss, keyboardist and vocalist Chris Bruder, guitarist Scott McIntosh, bassist Tom Altobelli, and drummer Jordan Snider. They are a musical force to be reckoned with, fusing elements of rock, hip hop and funk for a musical experience as unique and captivating as their hometown.

HPO Principal Bass and artistic lead Rob Wolanski and Hamilton-based composer Christien Ledroit have created innovative cross-genre works for The Altobeelays and a chamber ensemble of the HPO. The quintet will perform their own works as well as arrangements of the works of composers like Stravinsky, Dvořák and Debussy.

“I think the overall sound will cover a lot of bases – sometimes thick and dark, sometimes light and playful, and sometimes just one big party!” says Christien Ledroit of the sound people can expect at this edition of the indie Series.

Supported by TD, the Indie Series gives Hamiltonians the opportunity to experience HPO musicians perform with local emerging bands, in a hybrid concert experience that features new and familiar works, blending the classical and contemporary genres. This program feature innovative music that pushes traditional boundaries and connects with new audiences to introduce more people to Hamilton’s thriving music scene.
