 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMILTON – The HPO is thrilled to announce its Turkstra Summer Concert Series happening at outdoor festivals and venues around the community. This series of free performances is made possible with a generous donation from Peter and Jen Turkstra, in honour of their late parents Carl and Kate. The series includes a full orchestra performance at Festival of Friends, the Brass Quintet outside the Burlington Public Library and the HPO Strings at Supercrawl.

“We are extremely grateful to the Turkstras for continuing to build on their incredible family legacy of supporting the arts in Hamilton. Carl and Kate were truly dedicated individuals who understood that a thriving arts community is an essential part of a healthy city. Thank you to Jen and Peter for keeping their parents’ legacy alive in our community,” says Kim Varian, HPO Executive Director. “Community outreach is an essential part of what we do at the HPO and we’re so excited to have this opportunity to share music with our city this summer.”

The first stop in the series sees the full orchestra performing on the Festival of Friends mainstage at Gage Park on August 5 with a ‘70s inspired set. Next, the Brass Quintet brings summer favourites and their signature charm to the Burlington Public Library Central Branch for an outdoor concert of fun and engaging music for listeners of any age. We cap the summer off at Supercrawl on September 9 for a collaboration with the HPO Strings and Hamilton hip hop artist LT the Monk. All performances are generously supported by the Turkstra family.

The Turkstra family has a decades-spanning legacy as advocates of the arts in Hamilton. In 2011, Carl and Kate Turkstra began the incite Foundation for the Arts, providing direct financial support to dozens of Hamilton arts organizations. Both Carl and Kate were longtime HPO subscribers with Carl also serving on the board of directors for many years. The HPO would likely not be where it is today without the Turkstras’ support, and we thank them for their incredible contributions to the Hamilton community.
