Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra embarks on a grand symphonic adventure at the 25-26 season-opening concert, The Journey Begins, on September 20 at 7:30pm. Showcasing early masterpieces of iconic composers, this concert offers a glimpse into their distinctive emerging styles and budding genius that would come to define their careers.

To kick off his second season as HPO Music Director, James Kahane leads the orchestra on Jean Sibelius’ En Saga. Sibelius described this piece full of epic melodies and Finnish folkloric inspiration as “an adventure in an inner landscape” later reflecting: “in no other work have I revealed myself so completely.” Next comes the virtuosic brilliance of Roman Rabinovich performing Sergei Prokofiev’s daring First Piano Concerto. With its unconventional rhythmic drive that highlights the percussive qualities of the piano, it cemented the young composer’s status as a formidable force in the world of music.

Hamilton’s own Abigail Richardson-Schulte then transports us to an icy planetoid in Eris to tell the tale of the disruptive Greek goddess by the same name. The evening closes with Shostakovich’s First Symphony, remarkably composed at just 19 years of age, brimming with his characteristic humour, cinematic storytelling and expressive range.

“Despite them being early career works, each composer already had distinct and well-established skills that allowed them to be proud of their work — which wasn’t always the case with other composers and artists,” said Music Director James Kahane. “I am thrilled to ‘begin the journey’ of our 25-26 season alongside the orchestra musicians and incredible talent Roman Rabinovich as soloist.”

Ahead of this unforgettable evening of music, audience members can enrich their listening experience by attending the pre-concert talk at 6:30pm, or our Talk & Tea event on Friday, September 19. Both hosted by Abigail Richardson-Schulte, each event includes rich discussions around the music history and intricacies of performing these captivating early works.
