HAMILTON – On April 5 at 7:30pm the HPO presents Beyond Time and Place, a new music concert conducted and curated by Music Director Gemma New. Join the HPO at Wilson Concert Hall at McMaster University to experience the music of internationally-renowned Canadian composers Vivian Fung and Claude Vivier, as well as preeminent American composer John Adams.
“This program transcends time, place and culture,” says Music Director Gemma New, “We have two Canadian composers that have traveled widely around the world to different cultures, and this music has been particularly influenced by the Asian indigenous music.”
Hear Canadian composer Vivian Fung’s String Sinfonietta, a work infused with the unique sounds of traditional Balinese gamelan music. “Claude Vivier was one of Canada’s most internationally recognized artists,” says Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte, “His work on this concert, Zipangu, is said to represent the power and mystical effect that the search for Japan had on Marco Polo.” The concert culminates in John Adams’ energetic Shaker Loops, a work inspired by a frenzied dance that culminates in an epiphany of physical and spiritual transcendence.
“This program is about rituals, freedom of expression and abandonment, striving for perhaps unattainable dreams and visions, “ says Gemma New, “The musical style is all about vibrant, rippling, shimmering, dancing atmospheres, as well as serene, floating, beautiful, ethereal textures. In listening to this music, one will open themselves to an incredibly interesting range of colours, moods, light, and energy.”
Audience members are invited to attend a post-concert panel discussion in partnership with McMaster University’s Socrates Project. Socrates Project Director Rina Fraticelli will moderate this conversation with Gemma New, Composer-in-Residence Abigail Richardson-Schulte and artists from the local visual arts and music scene that examines how abstraction in art encourages critical thought and reinterpretation through cross-disciplinary artistic practices.
