TUESDAY, AUGUST 22

Sectionals with HPO Musicians
During this breakout session, participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups with an HPO coach. Participants playing the same instrument will be coached together, allowing the students to focus on the techniques and challenges specific to their instrument. This is a unique chance to work directly with professional musicians of the HPO.
11:30am -12:30pm
Mock Auditions
Participating young musicians participate in a mock audition for a panel composed of the HPO orchestral coaches. This is a learning opportunity simulating a school or orchestral audition within a safe and friendly environment. The experience will provide performance experience and contribute to each participant’s musical development. Participants should prepare to perform a scale and three-minute excerpt of their choice.

Participants can enjoy a break and get to know one another during the lunch period.

Full Orchestra Rehearsal with Gemma New
Under the baton of HPO Music Director Gemma New, participants will rehearse exciting pieces to be performed in the final workshop showcase. Repertoire will include selections from Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5, Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Schubert’s Symphony No.8 (Unfinished Symphony).

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23

Artistic Development Panel 1
During this open forum, participants will discuss topics pertinent to performance and music making with knowledgeable professional musicians. This first panel discussion focuses on strategies for efficient practicing. HPO coaches will guide the discussion, allowing the participants to share their own experiences and ideas.

Attend Concert at Royal Botanical Gardens (Hendrie Park)
Participants enjoy a night out with their fellow musicians as they attend an outdoor concert at the Royal Botanical Gardens. The concert will feature internationally acclaimed vocalist and jazz pianist Carol Welsman. Participants have the opportunity to explore the gardens prior to the concert. Transportation, concert ticket and dinner will be provided.

This open forum will focus on audition preparation and combating performance anxiety.

Dinner Break and Performance Preparation
Dinner will be provided in this short break between rehearsal and the final showcase for friends and family.

Post-Showcase Reception
Following the final showcase, participants will celebrate their hard work with friends and family. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

Other Ways We Engage: Tickets to the HPO
Following the completion of camp, all participating young musicians are invited to meet in September to see Music Director Gemma New and the musicians of the HPO perform Russian Celebrations at FirstOntario Concert Hall on Saturday, September 23. Each participating young musician will receive two complimentary tickets to this HPO mainstage concert as part of their camp registration.
