What is the time commitment for the HPYO?
Both the Concert Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestras meet Saturday mornings throughout the season, September to May.
For the 2021/22 season, redesigned programming will be announced throughout the season, including changes to ensemble sizes as current health guidelines evolve. The HPYO is expected to begin the season online with workshops and sessions led by HPYO faculty, moving to in person activities beginning in winter 2022.
All HPYO activities will adhere to public health guidelines and restrictions.
HPYO rehearsals generally take place weekly. In addition to weekly rehearsals there are three concerts and an annual side-by-side concert with the HPO. There may be additional musical opportunities and community events.
HPYO members are required to check weekly emails throughout the season and note all schedule updates.
If you have further questions, please email HPYO General Manager Courtney Prizrenac at cprizrenac@hpo.org.

How do I know which orchestra I should audition for?
Private music teachers are an excellent resource when preparing for an audition – we encourage musicians to ask their teachers before beginning audition preparation which orchestra they would be best suited to audition for.
Musicians are welcome to prepare the materials for the Philharmonic Orchestra if they wish, but coaching faculty reserves the right to make placement decisions based on the audition results.
Please feel free to reach out to the HPYO General Manager, Courtney Prizrenac if you have questions regarding audition preparation and the two orchestras.

What is required for an HPYO audition?
After your audition application is processed, you will receive information regarding audition-preparation and performance requirements via email. Specific audition requirements for your instrument will be included.
For the Concert Orchestra, you can expect to be asked to play one to two minutes of a solo or etude of your choice (no accompaniment) and perform one, one-octave scale in one of the keys provided.
For the Philharmonic orchestra, you can expect to be asked to play two to five minutes of a solo or etude of your choice, one two-octave scale from the keys provided, and the orchestral excerpts provided for your instrument.
Auditions are approximately 10 minutes long and will be submitted by video for the 2021-2022 season. Your audition will be reviewed by HPYO faculty.

What is the difference between the Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra?
Designed for musicians in the earlier stages of their music education, the Concert Orchestra provides a supportive environment for musicians to learn about the orchestra and develop their musical skills.
The Philharmonic Orchestra is designed for more experienced musicians performing at a high musical level, and who have had past orchestral or ensemble experience.
Placement in either of the orchestras is at the discretion of the coaching faculty and will be determined once auditions are completed.

I have difficulty receiving HPO emails, or I do not receive them at all. How can I be sure I receive access to my online concert purchases?
Email client security settings can sometimes prevent our emails from arriving in your inbox. Be sure to add communications@hpo.org and boxoffice@hpo.org to your email address book. You can also check to see if our emails are landing in your Junk Mail folder (or for Gmail users, the “Promotions” tab). Work or school emails often have very high security settings that may be blocking our emails.
We also strongly encourage our patrons to subscribe to our e-newsletter. Visit hpo.org/signup to join.
If you have not received an email providing access to a concert you purchased 24hrs in advance of the concert, please email communications@hpo.org.

Can I purchase online concerts for someone else?
