Hamilton Phil’s Board of Directors is thrilled to announce the three-year renewal of James S. Kahane’s contract as Music Director to June 2030.
James made his Hamilton Phil debut in September 2024 with Grieg & Sibelius and has since brought a distinctive focus to programming, audience engagement and community connection.
“Since 2024, James has brought his distinctive artistic vision and energy to the Hamilton Phil,” says Alex Muggah, Board Chair. “His leadership has sparked curiosity and joy amongst our patrons, challenging us to think ambitiously about how an orchestra can represent and connect its community. The Board is pleased to renew our partnership with James, building on the artistic momentum he has established. We look forward to all that we will accomplish together!”
Under his artistic leadership, the Orchestra has expanded its programming to include the return of opera, created new opportunities for audiences to experience the Orchestra through open rehearsals, and strengthened partnerships with arts organizations and artists across the region. Together, these initiatives reflect James’ commitment to broadening the ways audiences can experience orchestral music and to making the Hamilton Phil an increasingly vital part of the community.
“Working with James has been an exciting and inspiring chapter for the Hamilton Phil,” says Kim Varian, Executive Director. “His artistic leadership has helped us deepen our connection with audiences, artists and our community, while creating new opportunities for the Orchestra to grow and evolve. This renewal gives us the opportunity to build on that momentum and continue delivering ambitious, meaningful and memorable experiences for Hamilton and beyond.”
In addition to his role as Music Director of Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, James is founding member and Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de la Drôme. He has guest conducted with symphonies across Canada and internationally.
“Being the Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra has been the greatest privilege of my life, and I’m deeply honoured to continue in this role,” says James Kahane, Music Director. “Over the past several seasons, I have been inspired by the extraordinary musicians of the Hamilton Phil, our caring audiences, and the remarkable energy of the community here in Hamilton that help us strive for the highest level of ambition. Here, I have found a sense of momentum and a wide breadth of possibility which stands out on the music scene, and I’m excited to continue building on the legacy of the Orchestra and to humbly contribute to its rise. I look forward to exploring new artistic ideas, championing Canadian and emerging artists, and creating meaningful musical experiences for our community in the years ahead.”
The Hamilton Phil’s 26-27 season is opening this Saturday, October 3, with James Kahane conducting, Beethoven’s Sixth.
