About the HPO
The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is a dynamic organization that has contributed to shaping the region’s arts and culture landscape for more than 140 years with a mission to connect our community through inspiring orchestral music and engaging experiences. Programs include symphony concerts, a robust music education program, including a youth orchestra, artistic mentorship and collaborations and community-based partner programs designed to meet the needs and interests of our diverse community.
Call for Board Members
A non-profit, registered charity, the HPO is seeking engaged, enthusiastic and resourceful individuals to join its Board of Directors. Our volunteer Board of Directors supports the work of the HPO by providing mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Board members serve in a volunteer capacity and do not receive financial compensation. The term of office is three years, renewable consecutively a maximum of three times.
Following our recent board skills assessment, we are particularly interested in individuals with experience in finance, accounting, audit, risk management, or financial oversight, who can contribute to the financial governance of the organization. Specific board member responsibilities include:
- Acting in a position of trust for the community with a responsibility for the effective governance of the organization,
- Staying informed about organizational matters and contributing insight at meetings,
- Anticipated time commitment is approximately 3–5 hours per month including board and committee meetings and preparation,
- Regular attendance at board and committee meetings (6-7 times per year),
- An opportunity to serve on committees, depending on interest and expertise,
- Attending performances and other activities of the HPO,
- Supporting the organization’s fundraising and relationship-building efforts,
- Acting as an ambassador and advocate for the HPO in the community.
The HPO is committed to inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility. We seek to have our Board reflect the community we serve and to remove barriers to participation in the work of the Board. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and lived experiences, including those from equity-deserving communities. Previous experience on not-for-profit boards is an asset but is not required.
