Our intimate new series opens with a programme featuring works for the Classical orchestra by the greats: Bach and Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Haydn's "Fire" symphony is mirrored in the pyrotechnics of Bach's Concerto for Two Violins, performed by the HPO's veteran concertmaster Lance Elbeck and our new Principal 2nd violin, the talented Bethany Bergman. James Sommerville also conducts the brilliant and light-hearted "Impresario" Overture and Beethoven's Symphony #1.
Mozart - Der Schauspieldirektor Overture
Haydn - Symphony No. 59 (Fire)
Bach - Concerto for 2 Violins D Minor
Beethoven - Symphony No. 1
A feast for the ears, featuring the virtuosity of individual sections of the HPO. The rich sonority and colour of the HPO's winds emerge in Gounod's Petite Symphonie, and Brahms' mellifluous Serenade No.2. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #6 gives the strings a chance to shine, and will introduce many to the dulcet tones of the viola da gamba. These ensembles will show off the remarkable acoustics of Hamilton's century-old Central Presbyterian Church.

All of the composers on this programme were child prodigies in their own time, mastering their instruments and producing works of astonishing maturity, before they were out of short pants. James Sommerville is especially pleased to present to you the amazing young Calgary pianist Jan Lisiecki - already thrilling audiences across Canada at the age of 13.

Prokofiev -
