String Quartet

“In this era when funding to education has meant that music programming is often curtailed, presentations like this are all the more important” – W.H. Ballard Elementary School

The HPO String Quartet presentation provides a close-up look at instruments of the string family. The instruments are heard separately and in small combinations, allowing students to experience the different pitches and tonal qualities of the violin, viola and cello. Elements of music such as tempo, dynamics, rhythm and harmony are demonstrated using student participation. A wide variety of musical styles will be heard.

Woodwind Trio

I was thoroughly impressed with the way the program was laid out with an emphasis on addressing various components of our music curriculum” – St. Paul Separate School

The HPO Woodwind Trio is comprised of three favourite instruments: the Flute, Oboe and Bassoon. Energetic and entertaining, this presentation introduces students to the range and flexibility of instruments in the woodwind family. Students will learn about elements of music while listening to a variety of engaging pieces and participating in activities with the trio. Some additional instruments may make a surprise appearance.

Brass Quintet

The humour and pacing were perfect. The children were very entertained and engaged by the information and the performance. This was the best musical presentation we have seen in a long time” – Prince Philip Junior Public School

The HPO Brass Quintet engages students in a lively and informative exploration of music- making. The French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba are each featured in music from a wide range of musical styles and periods. Students will learn how brass instruments work and discover their varied pitch and tonal range. This energetic show features interactive components that students of all ages will enjoy.

Percussion Duo

If schools have the chance to experience any of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra presentations, I would strongly encourage them to take advantage of this entertaining learning opportunity” – Ryerson Middle School

The HPO Percussion Ensemble invites you to take part in a performance that promotes a broad understanding of the possibilities of musical sound. To the delight of students, this duo plays more than 50 percussion instruments. Educational and entertaining, the presentation relies heavily on audience participation. Students will explore music of many cultures and the variety of sounds made by percussion instruments. This program is available in English or French.
