Meet the Orchestra: Melanie Eyers

Q: When did you start playing?
A:  I started the playing the bassoon in Grade 7

Q: What made you choose your instrument?
A:  When I entered Grade 7 at school I had already been playing flute for two years and the piano for five years.  Everyone in my Grade 7 class was just starting to learn an instrument.   It cost $30 a month to rent a clarinet or other instruments from Ward Music, but the school owned a bassoon and it was available for $5 a month.  I thought that since my mom had already bought me a flute, she may be convinced to spend just $5 a month on a bassoon so that I would not be bored in band class.

Q: What is your most memorable HPO experience?
A:  My first day in my new job as second bassoon.  I got on the GO bus at Union Station in Toronto and thought to myself, “I am the luckiest person in the world.”

Q: What kind of things do you like to do when you’re not playing?
A: Play with my daughter.  Go on dates with my husband.  Cook.  Bake.  Work out at the gym.

Q: Who is your favourite composer to play or listen to?
A:  To play: Brahms.  To listen to: Elton John or Dave Matthews.

Q: Favourite book? Movie?
A: Favourite book:  Out of Africa;  Movie:  The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Q: Do you have a secret indulgence?
A: Not a secret- good chocolate

Q: Who was your hero when you were 10? Who is your hero now?
A:  Don’t have one in particular
